When in 1521 Mexico was conquered by the Spanish, the customs, religion and daily life of its inhabitants changed. The traditional dance also mixed with Spanish customs, resulting in the style of Mexican dance we know today, which includes a lot of zapateo (footwork) but also in many dances shows the ritualistic customs from before the Spanish colonization.
